Octopodes at Play

When this idea popped into my head, I pictured a flurry of items flung about by overly enthusiastic octopodes and raining down on the ocean floor,. (On a side note, apparently while “octopi” is extraordinarily popular, it’s not actually correct since it’s not Latin in origin. Octopuses is apparently the most correct form, but I don’t like it, so octopods it is. Besides, octopods reminds me of dufflepuds from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and I love that word.)

Um, anyway… I sketched this one out beforehand (perhaps you remember the announcement?) and then promptly started working on custom illustrations for the Animeals Fundraiser instead and this got shoved to the bottom of my list. Those circumstances didn’t do this idea any favors. I ended up reworking the composition (losing a great deal of energy and “flirt” in the process), and it was a pain in the neck to transfer my original idea from a sketch. I redid this one no less than three times. On the last run through I transferred the design to a thick vellum to try and get the texture and colors right… I think it works (it’s not my favorite) but the piece required a great deal of experimentation and definitely was a trial and error adventure! And I’m maxing out my scanner for this… it handles the smaller pieces okay, but this size is a definite challenge. *Sigh* One day… !

I am also not entirely happy with my title… perhaps you have a suggestion? If you do, please leave it in the comments!

Two enthusiastic octopodes find a lady's trunk at the bottom of the ocean floor... what will they do?!

  1. 16 arms are better than 2? Haha. I like the name you chose! I could see writing a great children’s book based on this illustration. Have you ever tried adding a storyline to your illustrations? Seems like a good fit for you :).

    1. I don’t know if I want 16, but sometimes I really do wish for more than two!!!! (Or four, if Dad’s around.)

I do usually have little stories that go along with these illustrations, I just tend to forget to put them up. Thank you for the push though… I really should include the backstory. 🙂

      1. Yes, include the backstory if you think of it. Do your kids (the older one, I guess, b/c your youngest is just 1, right?) enjoy your art and stories?

        1. Yep the little one just turned one. Munchkin kind of sort of likes it, I think. It’s on his periphery and I think he takes it for granted that it’s around… does that make sense? Sometimes he’ll come around though and say, “Oh, Mama, I like your drawing!” So there’s hope?

  2. Okay, first things first: You are insanely talented! I keep staring at your art in awe of all the details that bring the image to life. Bravo, Dakota…

I am also not a fan of the word “octopuses.” Yuck. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

But I do like your current title! I’d leave it. Am I in the minority?

Have something to say? I'd love to hear it!
